Agency Description
The Training Division, Michigan Department of State Police (MSP), is responsible for the training of recruits and the administration and coordination of probationary trooper field training. The Division typically runs recruit schools twice annually on site, presenting 20-week courses of study that align with Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. Approximately 226 recruits have graduated from recruit school since October 1, 2023. Upon successful completion of recruit school, probationary troopers continue their education with on-the-job training through the field training program. The Division is also responsible for the inventory and distribution of firearms to enlisted members as well as the destruction of weapons forfeited to law enforcement agencies across the State.
The Division has approximately 50 full-time employees, and its expenditures totaled approximately $7.4 million in fiscal year 2024 through June 30, 2025.

- To assess the sufficiency of the Division’s efforts to ensure the accuracy of training records.
- To assess the sufficiency of the Division’s controls over firearms.
