The Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s (MEDC’s) mission is to achieve long-term economic prosperity for Michiganders by attracting and developing people, cultivating and revitalizing places, and competing for and winning projects. MEDC’s strategic focus aims to position Michigan at the leading edge of economic development in the nation with its Make It in Michigan strategy. MEDC states that it takes its stewardship of taxpayer dollars seriously, with an open and transparent process. MEDC prepares a number of reports summarizing activities of the programs it manages, many of which are required by State law. In addition, beginning in November 2023, MEDC began publishing a monthly scorecard illustrating the organization’s progress toward meeting certain targets under its Make It in Michigan strategy. MEDC has 20 business units who share the responsibility of meeting reporting requirements and had a total of 377 corporate and State employees in fiscal year 2024.

Audit Objectives

  1. To assess the effectiveness of MEDC’s efforts to report accurate key metric information on its monthly scorecard.
  2. To assess the effectiveness of MEDC’s efforts to report accurate job information on its publicly available reports.
