Agency Description
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Materials Management Division (MMD) oversees the solid and hazardous waste programs, radioactive materials activities, radon awareness program, and energy program. The hazardous waste section aims to protect Michigan’s environment and public health by regulating the generation, treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. The section is also responsible for the review of permits and licenses, which generally includes requirements for construction, operation, monitoring, and closure of landfills and hazardous waste management facilities. MMD was appropriated $31.5 million in 2025. The hazardous waste section had 30 full time employees as of
September 28, 2025.
Audit Objectives
- To assess the effectiveness of MMD’s oversight of hazardous waste facilities, generators, and transporters.
- To assess the sufficiency of MMD’s efforts to secure and monitor financial assurance instruments.
- To assess the effectiveness of selected security and access controls over Waste Data System (WDS) and Content Manager (CM).
