Director of Professional Practice

Craig M. Murray, CPA, CGFM, CIA, became Director of Professional Practice for the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) in November 2002. As Director, Mr. Murray is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the OAG’s Office of Professional Practice, which performs quality assurance reviews of audit reports and working papers, edits the audit reports, and conducts accounting and auditing research.

Prior to his appointment as Director of Professional Practice, Mr. Murray was a principal audit supervisor with the OAG.

Mr. Murray is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).

The Financial Accounting Foundation appointed Mr. Murray to the Governmental Accounting Standards Advisory Council (GASAC) in January 2020 as the representative of the AGA. Mr. Murray completed his term on the GASAC in December 2021.

Mr. Murray’s other service to professional organizations includes: member of the Journal of Accountancy’s Editorial Advisory Board; current Vice Chair and former Chair of the AGA’s Financial Management Standards Board; current vice president of the AGA Greater Lansing Chapter; former president, treasurer, and board member of the Lansing Chapter of the IIA; member of the National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers’ Committee on Accounting, Reporting and Auditing; member of the National State Auditors Association’s (NSAA) Audit Standards and Reporting Committee, Single Audit Committee and Peer Review Committee; and former Director of Public Relations and Board member for the State Association of Accountants, Auditors, and Business Administrators. Mr. Murray has also served on several NSAA peer review teams as a team leader, concurring reviewer, or team member.

Mr. Murray obtained his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Michigan State University and is a life member of the Michigan State University Alumni Association.
