The mission of the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) is to improve the
accountability for public funds and to improve the operations of State
government for the benefit of the citizens of the State of Michigan. It is
essential that the OAG have and maintain a staff of the highest quality and
integrity to accomplish this mission. Our employees are very talented and are
challenged every day by the varied situations and experiences they encounter.
If you would like to find out more about a rewarding and enjoyable career at
the OAG, we encourage you to look over the following pages as well as our
recruiting brochure and benefits booklet.
RECRUITING TALENTED CANDIDATES
We actively recruit talented candidates throughout the State of Michigan.
Formal recruiting usually begins on the college campus. We regularly visit a
number of colleges and universities in Michigan and conduct brief interviews
with candidates. We also invite candidates to interview in our office. These
interviews, along with applicant resumes and transcripts, help us to assess the
candidates' skills and abilities and compatibility with our organization.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for top-notch accounting graduates and information systems
graduates with the ability to analyze and synthesize information and reach
logical sound conclusions. Although we operate similarly to a public accounting
firm, candidates should be interested in working in a government setting.
Well-developed oral and written communication skills are essential.
Accounting graduates should have an interest in both financial and performance
auditing and an understanding of professional accounting and auditing
standards. A working knowledge of computer technology, including the ability to
use a personal computer, is desirable. Candidates must have the ability to
communicate clearly with agency staff, members of the Legislature, and all
levels of OAG management and staff and must demonstrate a desire to work in a
team setting. We also look for candidates who have an interest in becoming
professionally licensed as Certified Public Accountants.
Information systems graduates should be ready to apply their technical
knowledge to real-world situations and should demonstrate an interest in
working in an auditing environment. Candidates should also have the ability to
communicate clearly with all levels of OAG management and staff.
We offer the new employee the chance to develop a rewarding career and many
lasting relationships. Our diverse employees work on audit teams and this team
approach acts as a catalyst for developing strong business and personal
relationships. You will be working side-by-side with top-notch auditors who
were recruited because they were exceptional, highly motivated accounting
graduates.
Our ability to attract first-rate auditors is enhanced by our working
conditions, employee benefits, and the fact that our work is qualifying
experience to earn the Certified Public Accountant certificate. The majority of
our work is performed during normal business hours. We offer a very competitive
starting salary and most auditors reach the journey staff auditor level within
two years. New auditors also receive a very attractive benefit package
including options for health, dental, and vision insurances, long-term
disability income protection, retirement savings and deferred compensation
(401K and 457) plans, life insurance, and the option of choosing a flexible
work schedule. During the first year, new auditors earn approximately 2 weeks
of vacation and twelve paid holidays.
We also offer our staff a full range of continuing professional education
opportunities. In addition to professional development seminars designed to
improve and maintain your knowledge and skills, we offer financial and other
assistance to help you obtain your CPA certificate. We have a partial tuition
reimbursement program to assist those who would like to continue their
education in pursuit of a graduate degree.
